Treasures in Hilldale Caverns (17 Ready'reat 586 OY, 1/10/00 RL) After the battle, everyone returned to town for the night. Axel took a room at Lander's boarding house, apparently for no charge. In the morning, Angus Brightlash led a sermon thanking Pholtus for his aid in the previous night's victory. Shinshi, with the aid of his trusty friends spell, talked his way into the Mayor's house, where he perused religious texts in the library. Axel took the "brass lion" pelt and snake skin to Irahara the tanner for tanning.

Camen, Axel, Fingle, and Shinshi decided they should finish up the matter of the horn as soon as possible. Despite Jana the mule's annoyance at being called Bill, they made their way back to Hilldale. En route, they retraced the path of the undead army. Eventually that path joined up with the remains of an ancient road, which they followed in the darkness of the backside.

The ruins of the town were quiet and empty of bones. The party entered the cave, torches and ten-foot pole in hand. Axel strode headlong into a glyph of warding in the same tunnel where they had encountered several before. He ducked back just as a blast of fire exploded in front of him, and he suffered only minor singes.

Plunging into unexplored caverns, they heard strange laughter ahead. They followed the sound into a small cave full of tall, tree-like mushrooms. As they poked about, they were suddenly attacked by a ghoul-like creature. It lept out of the encircling mushrooms, clawed at them, then lept back into the shadows before they could respond. It emitted an awful odor that nauseated and weakened the intruders. As chaos ensued, it repeated this act until it raked Camen from behind, magically paralyzing him. Then the party beat a hasty retreat. From outside the room they threw oil and set fire to some mushrooms, but the fires failed to spread throughout the room. Next they prepared to face the creature directly with burning oil and returned to the room. As they did so, the creature lept at Camen (recovered from paralysis) from the darkness. But his spear was ready and with a deft move he impaled it.

The room appeared to be a an empty dead end, until someone sent Fingle to climb the mushrooms. He clambered up into the smoke, coughing. Moments later, coins began to rain down on those below. In all, over 200 pounds of coinage had been stacked on top of the mushrooms. They stashed the coins in sacks in a side cavern.

The next unexplored cavern had a pale blue light shining from an unseen corner. As they approached it, a swarm of bats rushed around them momentarily. Turning the corner, they could see the light was coming from a two-foot tall, glowing mushroom. On top of the mushroom sat a horn. The mushroom was in the center of a small cave, surrounded by similar, but smaller fungi. Out from behind these stepped half-a-dozen rodent-like, dog-sized creatures. They had six legs each, huge jaws and teeth, and were hissing at the party.

These creatures seemed baffled when Shinshi sent an unseen servant to retrieve the horn. But as the spell carried the horn out of its cave, a nearly invisible filament shot down from a nearby wall and snatched up the horn. Looking up, they saw the other end of the filament came from the proboscis of a Cave Fisher, a seven-foot wide arachnid with a pair of nasty looking claws. They managed to wrestle the horn away from it and flee. Around the corner, they were confronted with another one, which they drove off with flaming oil. However, considerable restraint (for these adventurers) was shown in not harming the Cave Fishers. They grabbed up their coin sacks and returned to the surface.

They emerged as the sun was rising on the backside. Fingle got a funny look on his face, then said that a ship would arrive "soon", and that he was to deliver the horn alone, in exchange for money. This sounded bad to the rest of the group, so Camen and Shinshi took the horn and left without announcing their destination. Fingle suffered some sort of bad hallucination, screaming about things eating his face. Axel comforted him some, then led him, Jana/Bill, and the money back towards town. Meanwhile, Camen and Shinshi decided to take the horn to the Starfly Temple.
